Color of Vestments for Divine Liturgy


WHITE - The Feasts of the Nativity of Christ, the Theophany, the Ascension and the Transfiguration (through their Leavetaking, inclusively, except on the days of Polieley Saints); the Feasts commemorating the Bodiless Powers and righteous virgins; and the beginning of the Paschal celebration (through the completion of the Paschal Matins.) Also, all Funerals and services commemorating the departed outside the period of Great Lent.

RED - The Feast of Holy Pascha (through the Leavetaking, except on the days of Polieley Saints); the Feasts commemorating Holy Martyrs.

VIOLET/PURPLE - The Feasts of the Precious Cross of the Lord, the Saturdays and Sundays of Great Lent, all Polieley Saints during Great Lent, and all services of the Liturgy of Presanctified Gifts.

GOLD/YELLOW - All other Feasts of our Lord Jesus Christ; days commemorating the Prophets, Apostles, Holy Hierarchs, Righteous and Right Believing Princes, all Sunday (Resurrection) services outside the period of Great Lent, and also all regular daily services.

GREEN - The Feast of the Lord's Entry into Jerusalem, and the Feast of Pentecost (through the Leavetaking, inclusively, except on the days of Polieley Saints); and also the days commemorating Venerable (monastics) and the Fools-For-Christ.

BLUE - All Feasts honoring the Most Holy Theotokos, as well as the Meeting of the Lord in the Temple (through their Leavetaking, inclusively, except on the days of Polieley Saints).

BLACK - Weekdays during Great Lent (even though the early Church did not have any black vestments for divine services, during Great Lent, however, vestments of "Royal purple", i.e. of dark burgundy-red color, were appointed); Funerals during the period of Great Lent.
